Vegetable oils have emerged as pivotal raw materials in the global transition towards sustainability, serving as renewable, biodegradable alternative storage petroleum-based resources. Extracted from oil-bearing seeds and fruit, major crops like soybean, rapeseed, sunflower and palm oil are increasingly utilised across green technologies. The most prominent application is in the clean energy sector, where these plant-based lipids are chemically processed via transesterification or hydro-treatment to produce biodiesel and hydro-treated vegetable oil (HVO), which function as drop-in, sustainable fuels compatible with existing engines.

Plant-derived lipids are also diving innovations in electricity generation and large-scale grid infrastructure. Power plants can utilisers or minimally refined vegetable oils as stationary bio liquids to generate clean electricity and heat, offering a reliable, dispatch able power source that balances the intermittency of wind and solar energy. Furthermore, the electrical sector is increasingly replacing hazardous, petroleum-based mineral oils inside high-voltage transformers with specialised vegetable-based dielectric insulating fluids. These bio-fluids possess significantly higher flashpoints, reducing fire risks in urban grids while ensuring operational leaks are fully biodegradable and non-toxic to surrounding soil and water ecosystems.
