Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO), commonly known as renewable diesel, is a high-quality biofuel produced by reacting renewable raw materials like used cooking oil, animal fats and plant residues with hydrogen at high temperatures and pressures. Unlike traditional biodiesel, hydro treatment removes oxygen and impurities, resulting in a cleaner-burning fuel that is chemically very similar to conventional fossil diesel. HVO can function as a seamless ‘drop-in’ replacement, meaning it can be used in pure form (HVO100) or blended with regular diesel in any proportion without requiring modification to existing diesel engines or fuelling infrastructure.
The primary advantage of HVO is exceptional potential for decarbonisation, reducing net lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions by up to 90% compared to standard fossil diesel. Furthermore, it burns more efficiently due to a higher cetane number and contains zero sulfur or aromatics, which significantly cuts down on local tailpipe pollutants such as nitrogen oxides and particulate matter. With a much larger storage shelf life and superior cold-weather performance, HVO provides commercial fleets, agricultural machinery and industrial generators with an immediate way of lowering emissions.
